Earthquake Early Warning Systems as an Asset Risk Management Tool
نویسندگان
چکیده
Losses due to strong seismic events can amount millions or billions of US dollars and affect regions for large periods time, even severely undermining the economy. Earthquake early warning systems have proven be helpful tools mitigate social economic impact on communities businesses. Recent case studies are briefly described, followed by examples proactive measures assets, infrastructure, citizens education empowerment, complementary earthquake systems.

Crowdsourced earthquake early warning
Earthquake early warning (EEW) can reduce harm to people and infrastructure from earthquakes and tsunamis, but it has not been implemented in most high earthquake-risk regions because of prohibitive cost. Common consumer devices such as smartphones contain low-cost versions of the sensors used in EEW. Although less accurate than scientific-grade instruments, these sensors are globally ubiquitou...
متن کاملModel-based Development of Self-organising Earthquake Early Warning Systems
A new approach for Earthquake Early Warning Systems (EEWS) is presented that uses wireless, self-organising mesh sensor networks. To develop the prototype of such IT-infrastructures, we follow a model-driven system development paradigm. Structure and behaviour models of network topologies in specific geographic regions are coupled with wave signal analysing algorithms, alarming protocols, conve...
متن کاملAn Integrated Systems Approach for Early Warning and Risk Management Systems
An integrated and interdisciplinary approach to Early Warning and Risk Management is described in this paper as well as the general technical implementation of Early Warning and Risk Management Systems. Based on this systems approach, a concept has been developed for the design of an Integrated System for Coastal Protection. In addition to this, as a prototype implementation of a modern environ...
